Summary

The New York Times number one bestselling title Bravery, courage, fear and love in a time of war。 Despite their differences, sisters Viann and Isabelle have always been close。 Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann is content with life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter。 But when the Second World War strikes, Antoine is sent off to fight and Viann finds herself isolated so Isabelle is sent by their father to help her。 As the war progresses, the sisters' relationship and strength is tested。 With life changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions。 Vivid and exquisite in its illumination of a time and place that was filled with atrocities, but also humanity and strength, Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale will provoke thought and discussion that will have readers talking long after they finish reading。

Great book and page turner, as well as a fresher in history, with the Nazi's invading France。 It's a story about two sisters and their journey's during the war。 Great book and page turner, as well as a fresher in history, with the Nazi's invading France。 It's a story about two sisters and their journey's during the war。 。。。more

Oof。 Couldn’t finish, it’s so basic, so bad, so gratuitous。

Heartbreaking。

I ended up really enjoying this book。 However, I listened to it & it dragged for quite a chunk of the book。However, I cried。 I felt it。 It was a great book & I don’t regret reading it。 So overall, it was long。 But damn, the war/wars…fucking suck。 Women are bad asses。 People do things that are awful when their scared & also do amazing things。

Loved this book and thought it was very well written。 I liked that it was a WWII book telling the story of women during the war and not the battles。 Both sisters stories were well developed。

A book so frustrating it brought me back to Goodreads。I wouldn't be surprised if Hannah has never stepped foot in Europe, let alone France。 An enthralling and emotional storyline, with some gorgeous moments of description, completely let down by the stilted, modern dialogue。 The characters were somewhat of a saving grace, but even still it was a disappointment。 A book so frustrating it brought me back to Goodreads。I wouldn't be surprised if Hannah has never stepped foot in Europe, let alone France。 An enthralling and emotional storyline, with some gorgeous moments of description, completely let down by the stilted, modern dialogue。 The characters were somewhat of a saving grace, but even still it was a disappointment。 。。。more

Amazing book, can't believe I read it in 1 week。 I was so engaged throughout it all and there were so many twists I didn't expect! 。。

I really liked this book。 I would highly recommend it。 It kept me interested in the characters and storyline。

I only read about 50 pages so this review has very little supporting evidence。 Basically, I couldn’t keep reading because the editing was terrible。 There were stupid grammar mistakes like capitalizing the B in before, which I just ignored, but the word choices were so repetitive。 Like oh my gosh。 I was too busy being irritated to enjoy reading the book。 Maybe my bar was too high because I had just finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns but for a 4。5-star-rated book, I expected better writing。

Struggled to finish。。the characters seemed unbelivable

The quote from the book which beautifully explains the story “In love we found who we want to be; in war we find out who we are are”

Absolute best book Ive read in a long time- I cried a lot at the end though, only read if you enjoy sad books。 The writing style is so easy and addictive, it transports you to a different time and place。

This is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read。 It is probably in my top two books of all time。 Kristin Hannah writes so beautifully her words are art。 I felt love and loss and inspiration as I read her book and this novel is undoubtedly one of the most lovely books I've ever held in my hands。 This is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read。 It is probably in my top two books of all time。 Kristin Hannah writes so beautifully her words are art。 I felt love and loss and inspiration as I read her book and this novel is undoubtedly one of the most lovely books I've ever held in my hands。 。。。more

Could not put this book down。 It is raw and tragic。 It beautifully illuminates what being a heroine can look like long after a war and the depth of sisterhood。 Brought me to tears on several occasions

Librazo!

Speechless I can’t seem to put the correct words together that would honor this book as much as it deserves。 It is a wonderful and exceptional story, beautifully written。 Defiant just became one of my favorite books。 A MUST read。

There’s a reason why this book has so many five star reviews。 It’s simply impossible to put down。 I’ve read All the lights, The a Tattooist, The Book Thief, all fantastic novels and this is another crackerjack。 I absolutely loved it。 At first I did find the chapters a challenge but decided to take my time and I’m so glad I did。 Highly recommended!

This book transported me to world war 2 France。 I read this as audio book。 I think if I had physically read it , it would've been hard to get through as the writing was slow and had lot of details。Nonetheless, the second half of the book was very good。 One aspect of the book was little predictable , but still at the revelation of that aspect ,even though I knew it would happen I was moved by it。 I liked family dynamics, the sister's bond。 It showed silent heroes of the war。 It shows how women de This book transported me to world war 2 France。 I read this as audio book。 I think if I had physically read it , it would've been hard to get through as the writing was slow and had lot of details。Nonetheless, the second half of the book was very good。 One aspect of the book was little predictable , but still at the revelation of that aspect ,even though I knew it would happen I was moved by it。 I liked family dynamics, the sister's bond。 It showed silent heroes of the war。 It shows how women dealt with the war in their own way, and they weren't remembered or given medals。 After the war they moved on with their families。It also gave perspective of the survivors of the war, how even though they survived , they had to live with the nightmare and memories of the war。 。。。more

This was a compelling page turner。 The characters in this book were relatable and memorable。 I LOVED this book even though the time period was World War Two era and so heartbreaking。

Jessica Messinger

Another great read from this author。 I am a fan of her other books and this one was an interesting perspective of a French catholic family during the world war。 Not sure how factually accurate, but was a page Turner。
